A look back on the top 2022 trends

Cheers to 2022 Weddings!

As 2022 comes to an end, let’s look back at all the top 2022 wedding trends! Even though these trends are considered 2022 trends, don’t worry if you are head over heels in love with some of them.  We are too! According to Brides.com, some of these trends will show up throughout 2023!

The biggest trend of 2022 was breaking tradition. Many of our couples have decided to opt out of doing the traditional bouquet and garter tosses. Brides.com makes a great point by calling this the “anti-trend” trend–breaking away from the traditions or standards of what a wedding is supposed to look like according to past expectations. Here at Judson Mill, we believe you should celebrate your big day your way with all the individualized touches that represent you as a couple. For some people, that means bucking the wedding trends of yesteryear and introducing their own ideas–and we love it!

Within the wedding industry, we've seen many couples continue to break through wedding traditions in creative ways.  One of those is the wedding timeline.  This year, more couples opted for small, intimate ceremonies or elopements with bigger, reception-only celebrations afterward. Some coupled even chose to reverse or completely toss out the traditional timeline!

Invitations, save the dates, and other traditional stationary has been swapped for electronic versions.  Not only is this trend more green, eco-friendly, and sustainable, but it allows for more creative flexibility than your traditional invitations. Electronic invitations can be more budget-friendly, and RSVP's are much easier to track electronically. We will most likely be seeing this trend roll into 2023 with us.

Another big change from tradition has been the use of nontraditional guest books. For ideas on different guest books look back to our previous blog called "Guest Book Inspiration," which is filled with creative
, nontraditional guest book inspo!

Twilight weddings have become more common, altering both the wedding timeline and wedding photography. Wedding photos are meant to be timeless and capture all aspects of the big day. Throughout 2022, we saw many couples transition from traditional portraits to more candid photos.  This style of photography has given a moodier, romantic aspect to the wedding photos.  "Love drunk photos" have become the “it” thing on social media platforms. This photo style may feature a blur effect, darker or moodier lighting, and very candid moments rather than planned poses.

Wedding florals and greenery have been a huge décor aspect for decades, but the styles have changed over the years. 2022 couples often chose to simplify their floral arrangements. From the ceremony space to their reception tables, florals have been very lowkey, simplified, and more inclined toward greenery than blooms. Even the bouquets have taken on a more petite form, completely changed shaped, or have been discarded altogether. Hoop bouquets or floral rings have become more popular. Martha Stewart Weddings says that this trend has taken the bouquets from traditional to trendy. With endless ways to style, many have fallen in love with this new trendy way to add a touch of uniqueness to their wedding day.

Alternative Entertainment has been a big hit with 2022 weddings! Some couples opted for a silent disco over a live band or DJ. Silent disco is a great option for the dance party part of your reception; it allows people the option of listening to the music through their headphones or chatting and mingling with friends and loved ones without shouting over the noise. Speaking of dance parties, we've seen many couples throughout 2022 doing nontraditional first dances or eliminating first dances all together. One of our very favorite new trends at Events at Judson Mill is the private lasts dance. A private last dance creates a beautiful, intimate moment for the couple. It’s a wonderful way to end the reception–and it makes for great pictures, too!

Photobooths are a fantastic way to entertain your guests during cocktail hour or the reception. Photobooths have taken on many forms, but have lately been trending toward video booths where guests can film short videos or boomerangs of themselves. In 2023, we might see video booths filming guests for TikToks! Even if there isn't a photobooth at your reception, keep in mind that everyone will be taking pictures during the big day, so, make sure to share a wedding day hashtag with your guests!  This can be on a sign at the wedding or sent out to guests prior to the big day. It’s an easy and fun way to keep up with the photos your guests will post on social media!

Let's not forget about a huge aspect of your wedding day–the fashion!! Wedding fashions are constantly changing and updating to fit in with the time period. Believe it or not, 2022 has brought back the 80s style wedding dress, with a 21st century twist of course. Bows, pearls, feathers, statement sleeves, and designs/patterns have seen a huge comeback this year. Even bridesmaids have been seen with patterned dresses! If you want some wedding dress fashion inspiration, check out fashionista.com or Brides.com. Are you a bride wanting a nontraditional or statement look? Try a bridal suit! They have also made an appearance throughout 2022, and we expect to see more of them in years to come. When it comes to wedding fashion, there are endless options for everyone to pick from to add uniqueness, flair, and most importantly, your own personal touch to the big day.  So, pick the outfit that YOU will feel your best in and rock it!

Events at Judson Mill loves to see our couples add uniqueness and personal touches to their big day. Whether breaking traditions completely or adding a few trendy aspects to a traditional wedding, the big day should always display the couple’s personalities and love for one another in the ways that they see fit. Remember–as the couple, your wedding day is all about YOU!

Did we miss anything? Share a trend you love in the comments, and let us know what personal touches you’ll be adding to YOUR big day!
