A Guide to Wedding Toasts & Timing: Who Speaks When?
Wedding toasts are a heartfelt highlight of any reception, offering a chance for loved ones to share memories, humor, and well-wishes. But timing them correctly is key to keeping the celebration flowing without long speeches overshadowing the fun. Here’s how to structure your wedding toasts and ensure every speech adds to the magic of the night.

Who Typically Gives a Toast?
Traditionally, the following people are expected to speak:
  • The Best Man & Maid/Matron of Honor – Often delivers a mix of humor, personal stories, and heartfelt praise for the couple.
  • Parents of the Couple – Express love, wisdom, and warm wishes.
  • The Newlyweds – Thank guests, express gratitude, and celebrate the moment.
  • Hosts (if different from parents) – Welcome guests and officially begin the evening.
Wedding Toast Timing: When Should They Happen? Timing is everything when it comes to wedding speeches. Here’s a suggested flow:
1. Welcome Toast (Start of Reception)
  • Given by the host(s)—often the parents or someone who funded the event.
  • Sets the celebratory tone before dinner service begins.
2. Best Man & Maid of Honor Speeches (During Dinner)
  • Ideal after the first course to keep guests engaged while they dine.
  • Typically lasts 2–5 minutes each—short, engaging, and heartfelt!
3. Parents’ Toast (Toward End of Dinner)
  • A loving tribute, offering wisdom, best wishes, and appreciation.
  • If both sets of parents speak, keep individual speeches concise.
4. Newlywed Toast (After Dinner)
  • The couple thanks guests, vendors, and family for their love and support.
  • Can include personal anecdotes or a light-hearted story.
5. Optional Extra Toasts (Before Cake or First Dance)
  • Sometimes close friends, siblings, or mentors offer brief remarks.
  • Keep extras limited to avoid speech fatigue.
3. Tips for Great Wedding Toasts
To ensure the speeches are heartfelt yet efficient:
  • Keep it brief – Under 5 minutes for key speakers, 2 minutes for additional toasts.
  • Practice ahead – A well-rehearsed speech feels more natural.
  • Include humor & emotion – Balance sentiment with lighthearted moments.
  • Avoid inside jokes or embarrassing stories – Keep it guest-friendly.
  • Use a microphone – Ensure everyone can hear, especially in large venues.
Final Thoughts
A well-organized wedding toast schedule keeps the evening running smoothly while allowing space for laughter, sentiment, and celebration. By selecting the right speakers, setting a clear timeline, and encouraging meaningful speeches, your wedding reception will have unforgettable moments that everyone enjoys.
